Calaiswood School provides specialist education to meet the needs of children and young people who have complex and additional support needs.

The school opened in August 2007 following the closure of Headwell and Robert Henryson Schools.  The school is co-located with Duloch Primary School in the Duloch Community Campus.  This situation offers excellent opportunities for meaningful links for individual pupils as appropriate.

We are priviledged to be in a school which is designed around the needs of our pupils.  We have a nursery, 5 primary classes and 3 secondary classes all with the highest quality facilities built in.  Other accommodation includes a pool with jacuzzi, a gym hall, homecraft room and art and music rooms with potential for full development of skills for life and skills for learning for all pupils.  Therapy offices and a nurses' base are incorporated into the build.

Our close proximity to Duloch Library, Tesco and Aldi enables us to access the local community for learning and teaching. We are committed to current initiatives on inclusion and have forged meaningful links with other education establishments, community groups and facilities.

All pupils in Calaiswood have an Integrated Support Plan/Coordinated Support Plan and a Personal Learning Plan. This is drawn up with pupils and parents at the centre and in consultation with relevant professionals.  A holistic approach is adopted with therapy needs being integrated so that there is a strong educational focus.

All parties’ work collaboratively to implement programmes and support pupils in achieving their individual targets. These are realised through a broad balanced curriculum within the National Framework for Curriculum for Excellence.  Multi-sensory and interactive methods ensure the curriculum is dynamic and meaningful for each pupil. The curriculum is at a level appropriate to the individual i.e. experience, awareness, participation and/or knowledge. We are currently adapting our curriculum structure in the context of Curriculum for Excellence.

The staff : pupil ratio is high to enable full curriculum access and entitlement for all. Classes are staffed by a teacher and pupil support assistants. There are teachers of expressive arts, nurses and therapists.
