Thornton Primary is over 100 years old having been built in 1904. With a current role of 234 including 48 children in the nursery, this non-denominational school serves the expanding village of Thornton and the surrounding area including the Traveller's Site at Heatherywood.

The main school building houses 8 classrooms, a large central learning area, gym hall and office accommodation. A  nursery facility catering for up to 60 three and four year old children is set within the school grounds. The playground is spacious and has a wide selection of play and seating arrangements with a garden which is continually being developed.

Our school’s aims focus on improving the quality of experience for pupils. The application of staff in the area of teaching and learning was highly commended in a 2003 HMIE inspection:

"Thornton Primary School provided a very good quality of education for its pupils. Staff were committed to improving and sustaining a consistently high quality of teaching and learning. They had successfully created a highly positive and exciting environment for learning. Pupils were keen and enthusiastic learners and a credit to themselves and the school."

Our Parent/Teacher Group is very active and organises many successful social and fundraising events. Consultation is a vital aspect of our school with the School Board, Pupil Council, Eco Council and House Group meeting regularly to discuss relevant concerns and issues. Our extensive extracurricular programme includes Football, Netball, Makewaves, Art and Craft, Choir and Bikeability. There is a Before and After School Club facility.

We are always pleased to meet with parents to discuss any aspects of our school.

Appointments can be made through the School Office.
