Message for Parents/Carers

Dear Parents/Carers,

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Thornton Primary School and ELC. The aim of this booklet is to provide our children and families with information about our school and ELC.

At Thronton, our vision statement and motto is, “Express to Success” and we aim to provide rich learning opportunities and support all children to reach their full potential becoming, successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens.

Our values were developed in consultation with our children, families and our wider community and underpin our vision. Our values are: Ambition, Included, Kind, Respect and Safe.

Thornton Primary have established links within the local community including our cluster primary schools and Auchmuty High School and continue to seek opportunities to develop further partnerships.

We have an active Parent Partnership who work closely with us to support positive outcomes for our children and families, and they are always keen to welcome new members.

We recognise the importance of working in partnership with parents to ensure the best possible outcomes for all our children and promote an open door policy. We are always happy to discuss any aspects of the work going on in school.

I fully appreciate that this booklet may not be able to answer all of the questions that you might have. Please feel free to contact the school to arrange to discuss any further questions you might have.

School Ethos

We believe that the starting point for effective learning is a positive ethos and climate of respect and trust based upon shared values across the school community, which includes you as parents. The school is well respected within the community and we have very high expectations of, and for, everyone in school.

We are committed to recognising positive behaviour and achievement. All pupils belong to a House and earn House Points which count towards a House Championship. Pupils are encouraged to share their work at school during class times and assemblies. Our pupils’ learning is celebrated at assemblies through our Weekly Wonders and Stars of the Week certificates. Our assemblies are led by the HT or PT and are supported by the P7 House Captains. We have a high level of support and involvement from our parents. We invite community members as well as parents, grandparents and friends into our school for special events and performances, open afternoons etc.

Pupil Voice is an integral part of the continuous improvement of our school. We have pupils leading various groups including; Pupil Council, JRSO, Eco Schools, Reading Group, Digital and Rights Respecting Schools.

Parental Partnership statement

We value parents’ involvement in their children’s learning and believe that working in partnership helps every child to thrive. Throughout the year, we regularly invite parents and families into school for busy starts and busy finishes, open days, and assemblies, providing opportunities to share in children’s learning and achievements.

We are always pleased to welcome parents who would like to support learning by helping with small groups or individual pupils. This is, of course, subject to the parent holding a current PVG check through Disclosure Scotland.

Our school has an active and supportive Parent Council, which warmly welcomes new members at any time of the year. The Parent Council is consulted on school improvement and plays an important role in organising fundraising events, such as school discos.

In the school and nursery, all parents are encouraged to sign up to Seesaw, an app accessible on mobile phones and tablets. Seesaw allows teachers to share learning directly from the classroom, helping parents stay connected with their child’s experiences and progress. Alongside this, our school website is constantly being reviewed and updated to ensure it provides clear, relevant, and up-to-date information for families, and we encourage parents to visit it regularly for the latest news and information.

Thornton Primary School was established in 1904. It has been refurbished to include a multi-purpose hall and a garden. We have a separate Nursery building which provides both an indoor and outdoor learning environment. Our catchment serves the local village of Thornton, Heatherywood, Thistle Park and Balbeggie Traveller sites and several farms.

The main school building houses 10 classrooms, a large central learning area, gym hall and office accommodation. A nursery facility catering for up to 60 three and four-year-old children is set within the school grounds. Our Nursery offers half day placements for children, AM or PM, Monday to Friday on a 49-week basis.

The playground is spacious and has a wide selection of play and seating arrangements with a garden which is continually being developed.
