About Volunteer's Green

Small, rectangular, enclosed greenspace located in the east of Kirkcaldy, just west of the Esplanade road. This is an attractive, well‑maintained greenspace that was redeveloped in 2023. The site consists of paved and lit paths around a central oval of mown grass. Shrub and flower beds, interpretation boards, and several benches border the space.

Park History

Volunteer’s Green in Kirkcaldy is one of the town’s oldest public spaces, dating back to 1644 when King Charles I granted the land to the Royal Burgh for recreation and community use. Originally part of the Common or South Links, it became known as Volunteer’s Green because local militia (volunteers who defended the town in times of need) used it as a drill ground. Over the centuries, it served as a venue for gatherings and civic events, and in 1972 a proposed car park development sparked a campaign that saved the Green and led to the formation of the Kirkcaldy Civic Society.
