Park History

In the 14th century, a castle stood in the centre of the loch. The loch was partially drained in the 1790s by the landowner, Captain Park. By the 20th century, significant coal mining activity had developed in the area, continuing until 1966. After the closure of the mines, a reclamation project transformed the area into the country park which was opened in 1976.
