About Coul Den
Area: 94 acres / 38 hectares
Coul Den is a unique nature reserve built around an old dam and reservoir, forming part of the Formonthills Community Woodland. This large greenspace wraps around the north of the town and provides direct footpath links to the Lomond Hills and Fife Regional Park.
The reserve’s unusual landscape comes from the split dam and the hollow of the former reservoir, now filled with wet scrub and woodland. It's an excellent habitat for wildlife. Around the edges, you’ll find rough grassland and enjoy great views of the Lomond Hills.
Close to nearby houses are blocks of conifer trees, planted when the new town was built. A network of gravel paths runs through these areas and across the site, linking homes to the greenspace. In the centre, you will see fields still grazed by horses, bordered by traditional stone walls.
Coul Den is well signposted, with interpretation panels that help you learn more about the area and make exploring easy and enjoyable.
