Flood pods

Flood pods are grey, steel storage boxes, about the size of a grit bin. They're close to homes in areas at risk of flooding. You'll usually see them on pavements or council land, secured with a combination padlock.

Each one holds a supply of flood sacks and 'hydro-snakes' that you can use to protect your property when flooding is expected.

Flood sacks work like sandbags but are much lighter to carry. They swell up when soaked in water and are easy to dispose of afterwards.

Use the map to see where flood pods are located. Select a pod to see its location details.

If you cannot use the map, or you need this information in another format, email floodpods@fife.gov.uk.

Who can open a flood pod

The code is shared with residents of the properties each pod serves, with a nominated member of the local community council.

If you live near a flood pod and do not have the code, look at the flooding leaflet for this information, or email floodpods@fife.gov.uk. For security, we do not publish codes online.

When to use a flood pod

Use a flood pod when SEPA issues a Flood Warning for your area, or when you're at immediate risk of flooding.

Remember:

  • only take what you need, as neighbours may need flood sacks too
  • do not take flood sacks out in advance - keep the pod stocked for when it is needed

How to use flood sacks

  1. Activate the sacks by soaking them with a hose, or putting them in water for a few minutes until they swell
  2. Place them where water could get in, pressing them firmly across outside doors and over airbricks
  3. Stack if needed, up to 30 to 40cm high

Flood pods usually also contain 'hydro-snakes’. These are longer versions of flood sacks and work the same way. They're particularly useful for covering wider gaps. Once activated, flood sacks and hydro-snakes can be reused for up to three months.

Getting rid of used flood sacks

Cut the sack open, empty the gel onto your garden and put the outer sack in your general waste bin. The gel is environmentally friendly and safe for gardens, wildlife, and pets.

Report an empty or damaged flood pod

We check flood pods regularly. If a pod needs restocking or repair between checks, email floodpods@fife.gov.uk and tell us where it is.

Get flood warnings

SEPA is Scotland’s flood warning authority. To stay informed:

  • sign up to Floodline for free flood messages by text, email or phone, or call 0345 988 1188
  • check the Scottish Flood Forecast for a three-day outlook

Flood pods are installed in areas with a history of flooding. We may move pods from areas with better flood protection to places at greater risk.
