Fife Nature Records Centre
About us
We collect, manage and share biodiversity and wildlife data for the area, holding around:
- 3 million species records
- details of sites designated for their natural heritage value
- habitat information
We are a member of the Association of Local Environmental Records Centres and the National Biodiversity Network. The data we hold has been gathered by a wide variety of people, including:
- local and national organisations
- professionals
- members of the public
Many records from projects, surveys and other contributors are available online through NBN Atlas Scotland, where permission has been given to share them. We also work with many National Recording Schemes and other experts to share and verify records.
What we do
We aim to build an accurate picture of local biodiversity and provide information to those who need it. This helps to support policies and decisions that protect and enhance the local environment and wildlife.
We do this by:
- encouraging more people to get involved in wildlife recording
- supporting local recorders and helping make wildlife records available for use
- working to improve the quality and quantity of the data we hold
- bringing data together and managing it in one place
- making it easier for people and organisations to access and use biodiversity data
- delivering tailored biodiversity information products and services to our users
- working to increase our knowledge of the wildlife within our area
- raising awareness and promoting the appreciation, understanding and protection of our natural environment
What area do we cover
Fife Nature Records Centre covers Fife and the wider Fifeshire area which includes Kinross. This is known as Vice County 85 (VC85). Vice counties are fixed, non-political boundaries widely used in wildlife recording.
