Fife Council, with the full support of Friends of Craigtoun, undertook the fabric restoration of the Grade B Listed Dutch Village buildings, which sit on a man-made island in a small lake within Craigtoun Park. This much-loved historically important example of ornamental garden design had been closed to public access for more than a decade due to its condition.

A comprehensive restoration of the building fabric was undertaken by Marshall Construction Ltd procured using HUB East Central Scotland.

The works consisted of:

• Removal of damaged and blown render from the island exterior, replaced with waterproof render at and below water level, and new lime render above
• New injected damp proof course to the entire perimeter of buildings
• Careful removal of all invasive plant growth from structures
• Reuse of all salvageable materials where possible to preserve the integrity of the historical fabric
• Brick repairs, replacements and repointing where required behind the existing render, including essential structural repairs and replacement of lintels
• New pan tile roofs to the island walls to protect the render
• Repairs and replacement tiles to all building roof structures where needed
• New windows where existing ones have been damaged, vandalised, removed, or required replacement
• Eaves overhang repairs to prolong the longevity of the structure
• Replacement of structure and column casings to timber loggia of café building
• Repainting of original render and smooth render window surrounds to reflect historical information
• Replacement timber doors
• Replacement and new handrails to perimeter openings and stairs
• Inclusion of environmental measures where required to protect endangered species

The completion of the works has allowed the popular boating pond to reopen this year, and public access will be available as soon as possible.
