Project Embrace is a pilot initiative designed to support children and young people
with neurodiverse conditions or other vulnerabilities when travelling. Some of these children may not be able to speak, or may have other needs that make it harder for them in emergencies.
It aims to provide an element of safety if something serious happens, like a road accident. For example, if a parent or carer is unconscious and cannot explain what the child needs, this project helps others understand.
The seatbelt cover is designed to be used with booster seats and adult seat belts, to draw the attention of emergency responders in the event of a road traffic collision. It wraps securely around the adult seatbelt using Velcro and includes a small inner sleeve containing an information card.
If using a child car seat with a 5 point harness, the wrap can be fitted around the adult seatbelt next to where the child is sitting.
The wrap includes a small inner sleeve containing an information card to help responders quickly understand the child’s needs.
In an emergency, a first responder (such as police, ambulance or fire service) or a member of the public can check inside the seatbelt cover. This helps them quickly understand how to support the child and make them feel safe.
The card can also be used by the child to point to pictures showing where they are hurt.
The seatbelt cover is held in place with Velcro and includes a small pocket for the information card.
The card can contain important details such as:
- Emergency contact details
- Medical conditions and medication
- How the child communicates (for example, if they do not speak)
- Behaviours to be aware of
- Ways to help keep the child calm and safe
- Pictures to help the child show pain or injury
