By law, every business in Scotland has a legal responsibility for the waste they generate. This includes
- guest houses
- self-catering accommodation
- applicable B&Bs
The law
You must ensure you store, transfer, transport and dispose of your business waste without harming the environment.
Business waste must not be disposed of within public litter bins, domestic waste bins, recycling points or at recycling centres. Your business waste should be transferred to a registered waste contractor.

The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012
The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 require you to separate the following materials for collection and recycling:
- glass
- metal
- plastic
- paper
- cardboard
Suitable recycling facilities should be made available. As a minimum, you should provide:
- separate bins for customers to recycle glass, metal, plastic, paper and cardboard
- bins labelled clearly, to avoid contamination of recyclables and general waste
- information on recycling requirements and the importance of using the bins/containers correctly
- regular checks for contamination, and make improvements where necessary
Holiday accommodation food waste
The Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 also require you to take all reasonable steps to ensure food waste is separately collected.
