Interview process

The Interview process

Your new career with Fife Council is closer than you think!

Invite to Interview

You will receive an email to confirm that your application has been received. If you don’t receive this, please check your Junk/Spam folder.

After the advert closes, we will assess all applications against the job criteria and decide who to progress to the next stage. You will be notified of the outcome by email so it is important that you check regularly.

Virtual Interviews

We are currently carrying out most interviews virtually either by video or telephone. Please read the following to help you prepare.

Software

You will need to download Microsoft Teams either via the web or the app store if you plan to use your phone or tablet.

Once the online interview has been arranged, you will receive a notification which will include a link to join the meeting. Please do not delete this as you will need it to attend your interview.

You may want to test the software before your interview to ensure both your video and audio are working. Remember to check your internet connection before the interview.

If you have any issues please let the Hiring Manager know.

Preparing for the Interview

Please take time to read the helpful telephone and online interview tips and advice. These are available on the My World of Work website at A complete guide to competency-based interviews | My World of Work.

When preparing for the interview you should familiarise yourself with the job information/role profile and thing of good examples to use in response to questions. Remember to sell yourself, show why you should be hired for the position, answer questions clearly and in detail giving specific examples.

On the Day

Make sure you log into the software in plenty of time, you may have to wait in a virtual lobby until someone lets you in the meeting. Choose a quiet place without any noise or interruptions and keep your background neutral.

Have your right to work documentation to hand, as you will be asked to show this to the manager along with any other documents that are essential requirements for the job e.g. qualification certificates, driving licence, professional membership etc. The manager will provide you with an email address so that you can scan and email a copy of your ID to them.

Remember to dress smartly, make eye contact by looking directly in the camera and don’t forget to smile.

And finally, don’t panic if you experience technology issues, if the problem is outside your control and the interviewer will understand. Just let the hiring manager know and they will try to help

Telephone Interviews

Keep your phone line free and let others know that you’re expecting an interview call

If you’re on a mobile, make sure you’ve got a good signal and that your device is charged

Find a quiet space for your interview where you won’t be interrupted
