Fife Council Chief Executive's statement of support for EU citizens and advice for council staff
March 2019

Whatever happens with Brexit, in Fife we will always welcome and value employees and citizens from the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA) countries. People from all over the world play a vital role in the council’s work, as well as contributing to our vibrant local communities.

We’ve created web pages at www.fife.gov.uk/brexit for council colleagues and members of the public. These will signpost you to government information, updates and local support to help you continue living and working with us in Scotland. And, if appropriate, I would encourage you to apply for the UK Government’s EU Settlement Scheme when it’s formally launched.

To help us communicate more easily with employees who are EU nationals, we’re still asking all Fife Council staff to update the nationality field in their aboutMe record – please help colleagues to do this if they can’t access the system. Find out how to do this on the ‘Council staff & Brexit’ web page.

If you think there is anything else the council could do to help EU colleagues, please speak to your line manager in the first instance.

As an organisation we’re following Scottish Government guidance and preparing locally, as best we can, for the potential impacts of Brexit.

In the event of a ‘no deal Brexit’, the Government is already working to avoid issues like fuel shortages or medicine supply problems. However, should a situation arise that affects our ability to deliver services, or makes it difficult for some employees to get to work, our Critical Incidents Guidance will apply. This is the same set of advice and procedures that applies in severe weather – and all managers and employees should familiarise themselves with this guidance.

While the Brexit negotiations are beyond the council’s control, we’re committed to providing welcoming workplaces and dependable services. Thank you to everyone for your ongoing support. We will issue a staff update at the end of the month, whatever position is reached.
