Document and crest from the archives

We look after documents covering the last 500 years of Fife history.

Please note that the Archive Centre will be closed for the Public Holiday on Monday 19th July 2010.

This includes the minute books of Fife Council and records of the other official bodies that have been maintaining roads and dealing with other county wide issues since 1709. All sorts of different people appear in the records including schoolteachers and pupils, coal miners, and even witches.

Use the online archives catalogue search to see the sort of records we hold or to look for something specific.

Our main role is to ensure the permanent preservation of the records and to make them available to members of the public at the Archive Centre.

We are open to the public from Monday to Friday between 9am to12noon and 1pm to 5pm (by appointment). On your first vist you will be asked to bring proof of id so that we can register you as a reader.

We can arrange to stay open until 7.15pm on Tuesdays (as long as this has been arranged in advance with the Archivist).

Some of the Council's archive records are stored elsewhere at Libraries, Museums and other Council buildings - ask staff for further details.

Costs

There are no charges for using the Archive Centre. We charge for photocopying (25p for black and white copies, 35p for colour. Prices for scanned copies or digital photographs are £3.60 per image.
