Community Safety
For almost 20 years, Fife Fire and Rescue Service has aimed to educate people about the dangers of fire, using a mixture of approaches. We believe that to try to help people behave in a safer way, we need to focus on the particular issues affecting fire in a given area and this means talking to local communities - this is Community Fire Safety (CFS).
Fire station staff play a pivotal role in Community Fire Safety work. Firefighters know which parts of their station's local area contain risk areas and premises or people who are most at risk from fire. They are best placed to reduce the number of fires through education and getting our key messages across.
Our Community Fire Safety team works with all Firefighters and Community Fire Safety Officers to raise community awareness of fire and preventative measures which could make the difference between life and death. We work with local schools, businesses, residents and community groups across the county to spread fire safety messages and enable everyone to play their part in minimising the risk of fire and knowing what to do should a fire occur.

- Fife Council Domestic Smoke Alarm Policy
When national statistics show that 80% of injuries and deaths by fire occur in the home, there is a continuing need for community partnerships to work towards ensuring that people in their own home are given the greatest amount of protection and information to allow them to escape from a fire. Smoke alarms ensure an early warning and provide vital seconds during which the occupants can safely evacuate their home without unnecessary risk. Whilst there have been a number of worthwhile schemes in Fife, this policy will ensure a consistent approach and that the detectors fitted conform to an agreed minimum standard. This policy provides a benchmark standard for all Council Services, the Fire Service, Police, Housing Associations, community safety initiatives and voluntary organisations and others that wish to supply and fit detectors to dwellings.
