About Newburgh Orchard Group
The group aims to maintain and develop the fruit growing heritage of Newburgh so that the orchard keepers derive economic benefit, the children understand fruit growing and Newburgh is on the tourist trail as the Fruit Town of Fife.
Since the 12th century the monks of Lindores abbey grew fruit trees. The abbey is now a ruin, but the orchards that the monks planted have been handed down through generations as the gardens of Newburgh. They continue to produce wonderful crops of plums, pears, apples and other fruit. Until relatively recently, there was an active jam-making industry in the town.
NOG holds annual fruit fayres or street markets in which the local fruit is sold. We plan to work with the people of Newburgh to develop a scheme for selling the fruit in an organised way. We have created a Community Orchard in the grounds of the local primary school. We will hold workshops about pruning, orchard management and fruit identification.
