Disability Sport Fife (DSF) Sports Festival 2010

Archived news: published on Tuesday 09 Mar 2010 by Fife Council

Traditionally the Fife 5-a-side football and 6-a-side unihoc championships are the most popular event of the annual Sports Festival organised by Disability Sport Fife (DSF) and this year was no exception. Players from schools, colleges, clubs and resource centres from throughout Fife travelled to the Fife Sports Institute for a full day of keenly contested competition. SFA referee Neil Martin and unihoc umpires Aileen Penny and Celia Carswell were hugely complimentary about how the players had conducted themselves throughout the tournament. Fair play and sportsmanship are always key issues at DSF events.

Each year top players are identified in each of the individual divisions. Each of the following top players of 2010 received a special trophy:

Div 3 football            Wullie Christie            Robert Gough Centre, Leven
Div 2 football            Stephen Russell            West Fife Community Support Services
Div 1 football            Michael Aird    Adam Smith College

Open unihoc            Andrea Spry     Robert Gough Centre, Leven

The womens open unihoc championships involved players from two Fife colleges and two Social Work Resources Centres. The final involved teams from St Clair Centre, Kirkcaldy and the Robert Gough Centre, Leven. St Clair Centre had progressed to the final following a win over their Leven rivals and two drawn matches against the college teams. Robert Gough Centre players had defeated the two college teams but lost out to St Clair Centre. The scene was set for a close final. Despite losing to St Clair Centre during the qualifying stages, Robert Gough Centre members won the Engravia Centre for yet another year.

The mens Div 1 football final ended in a 4 goals to 1 win for the General Skills students from Adam Smith College over the West Fife Community Support Services ‘A’ team. The qualifying sections were keenly contested and the students won their place in the final with a win and two drawn matches. The West Fife team had to rely on a goals difference to win their place in the final at the expense of the Adult Programme students from the Adam Smith College. Although the score indicated otherwise the match was not decided until the final few minutes.

The mens Div 2 football final was an all West Fife affair. VORTEX (West Fife) defeated West Fife Community Support Services ‘B’ team by 3 goals to 0. The mens Div 3 football final resulted in a convincing win for the Robert Gough Centre players. They were undefeated throughout their section and along the way scored 13 goals. In the final they defeated a combined team from the East of Fife involving players from Dalgairn Centre, Cupar and other DSF member organisations.

Week three of the annual Sports Festival involves basketball, netball, table tennis and the continuation of the annual Fife boccia championships. Over a four week period DSF will involve over 500 members in a variety of different sports.
