Launched by the Community Safety Partnership in April 2002 the Fife Safety Camera Partnership aims:-

  • to reduce the number and severity of casualties on the road.
  • through analysis of intelligence-led statistical data, identify where speed cameras of an appropriate type can be used most effectively to have a positive safety outcome.
  • incorporate the utilisation of safety cameras into the general sphere of community safety by addressing areas of community concern.
  • be transparent in operations and activities.
  • forge clear tangible links to accredited road safety activities.

Partnership Manager's Update - February 2010

In response to intelligence, and to reinforce our commitment to the Force Community Engagement Model and Policing Plan objectives, we aim to deploy units in tandem e.g.  on opposite sides of dual carraigeways or placed a few miles apart on single stretches of the same route.

Priorities of our winter driving campaign include:-

Vigilance - Key to the road safety, drivers should be aware of pedestrians, especially the vulnerable pedestrian including school children.

Journey planning - drivers are encouraged to check weather reports, set realistic timelines taking account of road works etc. and, building in rest periods on longer trips because tiredness can kill.

Vehicle maintenance - tyre tread and pressure , lights, sufficient fuel and screen wash should be routinely checked.

  • In 2006, more than 60 per cent of all deaths due to road accidents were in rural areas.
  • The people most at risk on rural roads are young men, predominantly aged between 17 and 39.

 Speed – Country/Urban-The facts

  • Breaking the speed limit, or driving too fast for the conditions on the road, contributes to more than 727 deaths and 4,555 injuries every year.
  • In 2007, going over the speed limit was reported as a factor in 13% of fatal accidents. And exceeding the speed limit or going too fast for the conditions was reported as a factor in 25% of fatal accidents.
  • Over 70% of drivers in one study admitted to speeding.
